Expanding the Partition/Volume/FileSystem in a Virtual Hard Disk is essentially no different then doing so on a Physical Hard Drive so act accordingly. It will also depend on the FileSystem you implemented. For simple FileSyetems like ext2, ext3 or ext4 you can boot the VM using a GParted Live ISO Image and dynamically expand the Partition/Volume/FileSystem. However if you're using LVM that's a bit more difficult and there are tutorials on the Internet on how to do that. Google is your friend!
