The problem with "theoretical impact" is that anything is theoretically possible.
I would say finding a theoretical bug in VMware tools which allows you to PSOD the entire host is the most likely future problem, and the theoretical impact of that is obvious.
It's always theoretically possible that I could find a way to write to disk, such that I ended up exceeding a vmdk and overwriting another server. Very unlikely, but that's a theoretical impact.
